ballot_box This edition of Ring of Fire from South Africa tells the story of a female candidate in the Zambian Parliamentary Elections, September 2006. Akamana Debbie Mwangala, a teacher by Profession returned in 2005 to Lukulu, the district of her childhood.  She has since resigned from the teaching profession to stand in the parliamentary elections of the district with a strong desire to see the area developed to its full potential.  As the first woman ever to stand in the district in such elections, within an apparently male dominated culture, we thought it would be worthwhile to profile her views and election stand, and to gain insight as to what drives her to forsake her job for such a cause.

cimg0260Here in Canada ‘September’ is always synonymous with, and always accompanied by, ‘Back to School’ scenarios. One special school, MaryWard Catholic Secondary School, is known internationally because of its uniqueness as a ‘centre for self directed learning.’  Students are indirectly taught to take initiatives and to make the right choices in life, by studying and scheduling in a way that works best for each. A whole article could be written to illustrate how this ‘way of proceeding’ is a most singular experience and how it is lived out in the lives of the individual students and teachers alike.

The Problem: Our Education system has many weaknesses but one above all appears to me to be a crying injustice.  At the Primary level not much has been done over years to reform the system and so the situation of crowded classrooms and lessons after school hours continues unchanged.
