This edition of Ring of Fire from South Africa tells the story of a female candidate in the Zambian Parliamentary
Elections, September 2006. Akamana
Debbie Mwangala, a teacher by Profession returned in 2005 to Lukulu, the
district of her childhood. She has since
resigned from the teaching profession to stand in the parliamentary elections
of the district with a strong desire to see the area developed to its full
potential. As the first woman ever to
stand in the district in such elections, within an apparently male dominated
culture, we thought it would be worthwhile to profile her views and election
stand, and to gain insight as to what drives her to forsake her job for such a
cause.

Here in Canada
‘September’ is always synonymous with, and always accompanied by, ‘Back to
School’ scenarios. One special school, MaryWard Catholic
Secondary School,
is known internationally because of its uniqueness as a ‘centre for self
directed learning.’ Students are
indirectly taught to take initiatives and to make the right choices in life, by
studying and scheduling in a way that works best for each. A whole article
could be written to illustrate how this ‘way of proceeding’ is a most singular
experience and how it is lived out in the lives of the individual students and
teachers alike.

Who will speak for the poor if we don’t? The
Problem: Our Education system has many weaknesses but one above all appears to me to be a
crying injustice. At the Primary level
not much has been done over years to reform the system and so the situation of
crowded classrooms and lessons after school hours continues unchanged.
