Our Institute is called to sharpen its engagement with the Church
and world.
GC’06
September 2003 marked the beginning of IBVM
presence at the United Nations in New York as an NGO
(non-governmental organisation) associated with the Department of Public Information.
Loreto Sisters worldwide are engaged in:
- promoting dignity and life for all, especially women and
children.
- encouraging work for justice, peace and integrity of creation
- taking a stand for reconciliation and inter-faith dialogue.
In September 2005, IBVM worldwide made a
commitment to promote the UN Milliennium Development Goals, focusing on the key
ministry areas of education, community development, spiritual and pastoral
care, advocacy and lobbying, relationship with the United Nations. We also engage in issues of trafficking in
persons, HIV-AIDS, and the environment - climate change.
At the United Nations we engage with others
in addressing issues of structural change.
Through our New York office IBVM promotes UN policies and programmes, raises awareness
about the work of the UN, and brings the voices of our people to the
discussions at this place where the world gathers.
An
upcoming event: The 61st annual DPI/NGO
Conference
will take place at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, 3
– 5 September. It’s theme this year is “Reaffirming Human Rights
for All.” Three IBVM members will participate in this
conference: Marilla D’Souza (of India,
and our newly appointed UN representative), Evanne Hunter (Canada)
and Colette Ryan (England). .
