irlandesasLoreto as a Global Community       Freedom – Justice – Integrity
Welcome to the inaugural issue of Loreto’s international newsletter “Loreto as a Global Community”. The goal of this newsletter is to increase communication and interaction between branches of the Loreto Community worldwide and to create awareness of the important work being carried out by and on behalf of the Loreto Sisters. “Loreto as a Global Community” will also function as a learning tool for Loreto students who may not be aware of the extensive history of the Institute and its current ministries.

The Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM), also known as “the Loreto Sisters”, was founded by Englishwoman Mary Ward (1585-1645) in 1609. Continuing their tradition of education and outreach, the Loreto Sisters of the Catholic faith currently minister in twenty-four countries on five continents. The IBVM is organized into Provinces including Australia, Canada, England, India, Ireland, Eastern Africa, Mauritius, South Africa, Spain, and the United States, plus the Region of Peru. The General Leadership which overseas the IBVM is known as the Generalate and is based in Rome, Italy. IBVM Missions are currently active in Bangladesh, Ghana, Morocco, Sudan, East Timor, Tanzania, and Zambia. To obtain additional information please visit the IBVM website at http://www.ibvm.org
