The Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, often called "the Loreto Sisters," was founded by the Englishwoman Mary Ward in 1609. Her dream was to begin a new kind of community of women religious - an independent, self-governing congregation patterned after the model of the Society of Jesus, free of the confines of the cloisters, and responding to the urgent needs of her time. Though Mary Ward was imprisoned by the Inquisition and initially condemned by the Church, miraculously her charism lives on in the members of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary throughout the world.

 

El Instituto de la Bienaventurada Virgen María, también conocido como las “Irlandesas”, fue fundado en 1609 por Mary Ward, nacida en Inglaterra y cuyo sueño era crear una nueva comunidad de religiosas: una congregación independiente y autónoma, que siguiera el patrón de la Compañía de Jesús, libre de la clausura y que diera una respuesta a las necesidades acuciantes de su época. A pesar de ser encarcelada por la Inquisición y, en un primer momento, censurada por la Iglesia, milagrosamente su carisma sigue vivo al día de hoy en todos y cada uno de lo miembros que el Instituto de la Bienaventurada Virgen María tiene repartidos alrededor del mundo.
