In 1841, a military chaplain based in India, the Rev. Dr. Bakhaus came to Ireland seeking nuns “for the education of the upper classes as well as the poor”.  The Ursulines having refused him for a lack of members, he went to meet with Mother Teresa Ball at Rathfarnham. The Loreto Order was then only 20 years old, Abbey Church having just been completed that year. India was to be the inaugural Loreto mission although it seems M. Teresa Ball was not altogether keen at first.
