Mission is at the heart of who we are

IBVM/CJ at the United Nations

Cynthia Mathew, CJ and Janet Palafox, IBVM

The worldwide IBVM network, in partnership with the CJs, have had a presence as a non-governmental organization (NGO) to the United Nations in New York City for almost 20 years.  Janet Palafox IBVM and Cynthia Mathew CJ are the main representatives to the UN and work in collaboration to promote a more humane, just and sustainable world.

The IBVM UN NGO is a faith-based organization working in collaboration with other civil society organizations (CSOs/NGOs), UN agencies and member states to challenge injustices and unjust structures by bringing the insights of the people with whom we work and live, especially the most marginalized, to the UN. Its focus is mainly on women and girls within the context of social development, sustainable development and human rights.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a cohesive framework for the ministry and our representatives focus their energies on education, awareness raising and advocacy. Specific areas of involvement are:

  • Gender equity
  • Elimination of gender violence
  • Eradication of poverty
  • Access to quality education and health
  • Elimination of trafficking of human persons
  • Care for the environment
  • Financing for development

Its work is underpinned by the transformative dynamic of the gospel message, and guided by the vision of Mary Ward, Catholic Social Teaching, and the core values of justice, truth, freedom, sincerity and joy.
