IBVM South Sudan

July 29, 2022

IBVM Loreto is present in South Sudan since 2008, when the Irish Province established a mission in Rumbek, in the Maker Kuei community. This foundation was begun by four Sisters including Sr Orla Treacy who is now the Director of the Mission. She is joined by Sr Baiada Lyngkhoi of the South Asia Province and Sr Clara Atieno of the East Africa Province.

Initially the mission began a small school that has grown from a first class with only 25 girls to a current enrollment of almost 300 secondary school girls and a primary school with over 1000 students.

In Rumbek, South Sudan, members are engaged in both Primary and Secondary Education and they also provide internships for those who wish to do Teacher Training and develop other skills. The most recent development was the opening of a Healthcare Clinic which benefits the school population as well as the local people in Rumbek.
